great strategy
heres a strategy i use in the games. this works for any pokemon game, even r/b/y and g/s/c
you always start with a starter pokemon right? keep the starter and try trading with friends other starter pokemons, if you have all 3 of them, fire water and grass. great! if you can't get one of them, it's ok, you can always have a pokemon that's the same type of it like grass or something. now train the 3 pokemon you have until you think they're at the right level. how does this strategy work. fire water and grass can defeat different kinds of pokemon so if you have these types, you can defeat almost any pokemon in the game. then have at least a good amount of potions, paralys heal or ice heal or burn heal and other good battling items. if you follow these tips, you will be able to beat any pokemon or trainer in the game, even the elite 4. it works for me. if something is wrong and you can't beat some trainers, post here.

Re: great strategy
that sounds fun if you feel like doing all the trading
usually I just train what pokemon i have until they are one levle away from becomming disobedient, that way they are all strong enough to defeat enemies, even if they're week against them.
